Next month, from January 23 through January 31, 2021, the Festival and the Santa Fe Youth Symphony Association will co-present a free screening of the 29-minute documentary R. A. W. Tuba: From Sandtown to Symphony, which was produced by Early Light Media and premiered at the Mountainfilm festival in Telluride, Colorado, in May 2019.
R. A. W. Tuba spotlights the extraordinary and inspiring journey of Dr. Richard Antoine White (R. A. W.), who, while growing up, experienced poverty and homelessness on the streets of West Baltimore’s Sandtown neighborhood. Today Dr. White serves as principal tuba for the Santa Fe Symphony and New Mexico Philharmonic and as associate professor of tuba and euphonium at the University of New Mexico. He also holds the distinction of being the first African American to earn a doctor of music degree in tuba performance.
In addition to the film, the Festival and the Santa Fe Youth Symphony Association will present a free talk with Dr. White, via Zoom, on January 30, 2021, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. (MT).
Details on where to watch R. A. W. Tuba and where to register for Dr. White’s Zoom talk will be posted on our website soon. Until then, please enjoy the film’s trailer.
